What to Do If Your Clothes Catch Fire?

If your clothes catch fire, remember to STOP, COVER, DROP, and ROLL:

  1. STOP – Don’t run or move around.
  2. COVER – Protect your face by covering it with your hands.
  3. DROP – Drop to the floor or ground.
  4. ROLL – Roll over and over to put out the flames.

For Older Children (9 years and above):

Explain that rolling helps to smother the fire, cutting off the oxygen and stopping the flames. If you run while on fire, it’s like blowing on a campfire coal, it gives the fire more oxygen, making it burn faster and worse. Rolling on the ground helps to put it out quickly and safely.
