Three firefighters extinquishing a large fire.

All regional based MFS fire stations are staffed by retained (part-time) firefighters, except for Mount Gambier and Port Pirie fire stations, which also have full-time firefighters.

MFS retained firefighters are not employed full-time by the MFS. They often have primary employment elsewhere but are also employed by the MFS to do firefighting duties on a part-time, ‘on-call’ basis. This allows them to register their own availability in line with the regional fire stations incident attendance requirement.

Retained firefighters are paid for responding to incidents and for attending training, in addition to being paid a retainer allowance.

Retained firefighters respond to incidents where lives and property are at risk. This may include:

  • Responding to structural fires, such as fires in homes and buildings
  • Responding to grass and bushfires
  • Attending road crash rescue
  • Confined space or from heights rescue
  • Assisting with other emergencies
  • Helping with animal rescue
  • Attending incidents with hazardous materials.

If you are successful in becoming  a regional Retained Firefighter with the MFS, you will be contributing to the safety and wellness of those in your local community. There is a tremendous sense of camaraderie, teamwork and achievement in keeping those you care about most safe.

Other benefits include:

  • Skills and training acquired may be useful to your current employment or daily activities.
  • Valuable work and personal experience in the community.
  • Access to member support services, including counselling.
  • Being a part of the MFS family.
