Siblings' century of firefighting

Heater safety

The MFS is reinforcing the importance of keeping anything flammable at least two metres from the heater during the colder months.

Over the past four years MFS and Country Fire Service (CFS) firefighters have battled 139 house fires linked to heaters, solid fuel fires and open fires. [More here…]

Firefighter diversity boost

The MFS has seen a 35 % increase in female firefighters recruited since announcing a push for greater diversity three and a half years ago.

It’s a positive sign that an historical community stereotype of firefighters only being men, is falling away. [More here…]

Make Alex’s Day – Best Firefighter Ever

Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) firefighters often help children and families in need, but with Make Alex’s Day, they took it to the next level.

Eight-year-old cancer survivor Alex Tann became not just a firefighter for the day, but Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) Chief Officer. Diagnosed with a brain tumour at age three that left him blind, he is now in remission and dreams of becoming a firefighter. [More here...]

2018 Australia Day Honours

Two outstanding South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) firefighters have been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) in the 2018 Australia Day Honours.

Congratulations to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Paul Fletcher and Retained Station Officer John McNaughton on receiving one of the highest honours an Australian Firefighter can receive. [More here]

Alert SA App

On Saturday, 6 January 2018 the Alert SA App experienced significant performance issues which resulted in the non-display and provision of notifications and warnings to the community.

The Alert SA service provider has failed to provide the Emergency Services Sector with confidence of the solution’s reliability to provide safety information to the community.

As a result, from Wednesday, 10 January 2018 Alert SA App users are instructed to delete the Alert SA App from their device which will cease to display incidents and warning messages. [More here]

MFS shares the Xmas spirit

In the true Christmas spirit, MFS families have shared their annual celebrations with children from three South Australian charities.


Adelaide fire station was transformed into a children’s fairground for up to 500 children, including 150 children from charities The Smith Family, Junction Australia and Interchange SA.

SA’s fire services march with Pride

The MFS recently joined the state’s emergency services in celebrating diversity at Adelaide’s Pride March.

MFS, CFS, SAPOL and SA Ambulance personnel marched together through city streets to support diversity within both the emergency services sector and within the community we serve.

2017 Koala rescue

After surviving a 16 kilometre journey clinging to the wheel axle of a car, ‘Kelli’ the Koala was rescued by MFS firefighters.

New safety standard released for ethanol burners 

The South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and Commissioner for Consumer Affairs have welcomed the recent introduction of a new safety standard for decorative alcohol fuelled devices, also known as ethanol burners.

The new national standard, which took effect from 15 July 2017, prevents the sale of dangerous decorative alcohol fuelled devices and requires manufacturers to provide key safety features and specific warnings for other models of similar devices. 

Since 2010, decorative burners have been linked to more than 100 injuries and 36 house fires across Australia. [More...]

MFS delivers world-class USAR training

For the first time, the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) has put interstate firefighters through their paces to deliver world-class Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) training.

Twenty Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) firefighters and an Ambulance Tasmania (AT) paramedic faced a hazardous mock earthquake disaster scene, with collapsed buildings, trapped casualties and disrupted gas, water and power services. [More...]

Firefighters save Para Hills West factory & jobs

Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) firefighters, supported by the Country Fire Service (CFS), have saved a multi-million-dollar factory that provides employment to South Australians with disability.

Lightning struck wooden pallets stored outdoors at the Para Hills West facility, leading to a significant fire that threatened the factory and a neighbouring home.

Both properties were saved, ensuring that 75 staff can remain working at the factory that provides employment and training opportunities. [More...]
