Entry Requirements

Driver's Licence

At the time of application you must hold a current and valid C Class (Car) driver's licence. A probationary or provisional driver's licence is not acceptable.

A MR driver's licence will be required, at your own expense, during your 12 month probation period.

An HR driver's licence may be required at selected Regional Stations due to operational resources, at your own expense.

Driver History

Applicants will be required (at your own expense) to provide their driver history report from the last 10 years. This includes any speeding fines, driving under influence (alcohol or drugs) etc.

Serious traffic offences within the past 10 years will be considered grounds for a 10 year disqualification from consideration as a potential employee, taken from date of offence. Matters considered as a serious traffic offence include, but are not limited to:

  • Exceed Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol - 0.1% BAC or over or refuse (or previously fail to provide) alcohol tests, including fail to accompany or fail to remain for testing;
  • Two or more offences of exceeding Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol under 0.1% BAC;
  • Driving under the influence of drugs;
  • Found guilty, charge proven for offence of driving whilst licence is suspended, cancelled or disqualified;
  • Found guilty, charge proven for offence of driving in a manner or speed dangerous;
  • Refusing to stop when requested to do so by a law enforcement officer;
  • Refusing a breath test or drug test;


An applicant's overall driving record is also taken into consideration when assessing attitude to road law compliance. A poor driving record may result in your application being found unsuitable. An applicant's overall driving record will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Police Check

A Police Check will be carried out with the consent of the applicant. An offence will not necessarily deny entry into the MFS; each case is considered on its merits.


Applicants must be in a good state of physical fitness and be prepared to undergo a medical examination, at your own expense, as part of the recruitment process.

Provide contact details (name and phone number) of two (2) referees.

Birth Certificate/Residency

Applicants must provide evidence of being able to work and reside in Australia permanently. Evidence includes Birth Certificate (if born in Australia), Australian Passport, Certificate of Australian Citizenship or evidence of permanent residency issued by the Department of Home Affairs.

First Aid Certificates

Firefighters may be required to apply first aid to a work colleague or a member of the public. Legislation requires employees who administer first aid in a workplace to possess 'Apply First Aid' (or an equivalent unit of competence) and 'Provide Advanced Resuscitation' from one of the approved providers listed by SafeWork SA.

As a Retained Firefighter, you will be required (at your own expense) to obtain at least this level of certification within 6 months of a probation period. The required courses are:
Provide First Aid

  • HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid

Advanced Resuscitation
  • HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation

Proximity to Station

You must reside within ten (10) minutes from the MFS Station for efficient response to incidents. Any costs associated with fulfilling this criteria must be met by the applicant.

Availability to respond to emergency calls

To maintain adequate standards of fire cover and to equally distribute the workload among the firefighters of a regional station, all retained firefighters:

  • must attend the station in response to an emergency call within 10 minutes of being notified;
  • must attend the station at least 50% of the emergency calls, and
  • must attend the incident by riding the appliance at least 50% of attendances at the MFS station.


For example, if a station averages 20 calls per month, then all staff will attend the station at least 50% of those calls (ie 10 calls), and of those 10 calls, staff must attend the actual incident on at least 5 occasions.


Retained firefighters must attend a minimum of 80% of the weekly training sessions.
