Stage 6: Pre-Employment Checks

Applicants who successfully complete stage 5 will be given approximately 5 weeks to provide to the MFS the following documentation, with all costs relating to these components to be covered by the applicant:

  • Provide evidence of a current and valid MR licence;
  • Provide a copy of current First Aid Certification for Provide First Aid (HLTAID003)

During this stage, the MFS will complete your National Criminal History check and obtain your work references.

Medical Examinations

Successful PAT 2 contestants will be required to attend a series of medical appointments. The medical assessments are based upon the medical standards of health and fitness which are considered to be essential to a career as a Firefighter. Costs associated with these medical examinations are met by the MFS.

Medical examinations include:

  • Respiratory
  • Audiology
  • Full medical.

In the event that further assessments are required, the MFS will facilitate and meet associated costs.

Please ensure you are dressed appropriately for these tests (shorts and t shirt), and allow approximately 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill out necessary forms.

Criminal History

As a requirement of the process, applicants will need to give consent for the MFS to obtain personal information relating to criminal history. A National Criminal History check will be completed for candidates who successfully reach Stage 6 in the recruitment process.

The results of any criminal history screening are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Driver History

A Driver License History Report is requested after successful completion of stage 3 and prior to stage 4 of the Recruitment Process.

Applicants will be required to provide details of all traffic infringements over the last 10 years. This includes any speeding fines, driving under influence (alcohol or drugs) etc. Click here for information to find your driving history.

Serious traffic offences within the past 10 years will be considered grounds for a 10 year disqualification from consideration as a potential employee, taken from date of offence. Matters considered as a serious traffic offence include, but are not limited to:

  • Exceed Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol - 0.1% BAC or over or refuse (or previously fail to provide) alcohol tests, including fail to accompany or fail to remain for testing;
  • Two or more offences of exceeding Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol under 0.1% BAC;
  • Driving under the influence of drugs;
  • Found guilty, charge proven for offence of driving whilst licence is suspended, cancelled or disqualified;
  • Found guilty, charge proven for offence of driving in a manner or speed dangerous;
  • Refusing to stop when requested to do so by a law enforcement officer;
  • Refusing a breath test or drug test.

An applicant's overall driving record is also taken into consideration when assessing attitude to road law compliance. A poor driving record may result in your application being found unsuitable. An applicant's overall driving record will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.


Referee statements are designed to seek employment information on the applicant's work performance, competencies, abilities and potential. They also help to substantiate any claims made by the applicant and to validate the applicant's suitability for the job.

Applicants reaching this stage in the recruitment process will be required to provide the contact details of 2 referees (supervisor and peer).
