Road Awareness Program - RAP

What is RAP?

The Road Awareness Program (RAP) is a powerful, hard-hitting road safety presentation delivered by firefighters to both young and experienced drivers across South Australia and interstate. Originally designed for young people in Year 11, its broad appeal and effectiveness has allowed us to expand our reach into workplaces, sporting clubs, correctional services facilities and community groups. Designed to give an open and honest insight into the experience of firefighters working in road crash rescue, RAP seeks to actively engage and empower drivers and other road users through positive peer pressure and its core message: “You get to choose the risk; but you don’t get to choose the consequences”.

During the 00 minute presentation, participants are given a confronting and realistic insight into road crash trauma including vision of real crashes and crash survivors. Real life crash survivors, many now living with permanent disability or loss of a loved one, share their stories as part of the presentation. Participants usually find this element of the presentation the most emotional, but draw inspiration from the crash survivors’ resilience and strength.

Participants learn that road safety is their responsibility and get a clear understanding of the consequences of choices on the road. Firefighters discuss:
