The MFS Fire Safety Program and Poster Competition is back for term 3 and 4 in 2021 – this time for families with children in lockdown.

In its 19th year, this eagerly anticipated annual education program is loads of fun while at the same time giving life-saving information to primary school children and their families.

This year the program is offered to all South Australian children from Reception to Year 6 with lesson plans being provided to all Junior Primary and Primary School Teachers as well as Out of School Hours Care facilities.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 in our community, the MFS has decided to open the Fire Safety Program and Poster Competition to families in lockdown at home with children.

  • The Program is offered to children from Reception through to Year 6.

  • Download the information book. If you can’t download it MFS can post you a copy, email us your details to request it: samfscommunitysafety@sa.gov.au.
Please follow the guidelines in the poster competition information book.

  • Work through the age-appropriate lesson with the children in your household.

  • Ask the children to create a poster / drawing to reflect their home fire safety learnings.

  • Ensure the child’s first name, year level at school, and a contact address and phone number is written on the back of the drawing.

  • Send the poster / drawing to the MFS either

  • Entries must be received by 22 October 2021.

  • Judging will be at the discretion of the MFS.

  • Prizes will be awarded for the best entry in each year level.

  • Merit Certificates will be awarded to outstanding entries in all year levels.

  • Winners will be announced week commencing 15 November 2021.

Information including the lesson plans and how to enter the poster competition are included in this booklet:

Lesson Plan

The MFS has developed a Home Fire Safety Lesson Plan (PDF 329KB) that parents and caregivers can download to keep the little ones occupied.

Learning outcomes:

  1. 4-6 year olds. The children will be able to identify/name good fires and bad fires.
  2. All ages. The children will know what number to call if there is a fire emergency 000 (zero zero zero).
  3. All ages. The children will understand that they should not play with fire lighting materials, “matches and lighters are tools not toys”.
  4. 8-16 year olds. The children will understand why they must “Stop, Cover, Drop and Roll“ if their clothes catch fire.

Home Fire Escape Plan

Families can work together to create a Home Fire Escape Plan (see our brochure), so that everybody knows how to escape safely in the event of a house fire.

More information is also available via our Home Fire Escape Plan Fact Sheet.

J-FLIP

Our free, confidential Juvenile Firelighters Intervention Program (J-FLIP) helps families address the issue of children playing with fire.

Remember, always keep lighters and matches up high, out of the reach and sight of children. Call our J-FLIP Coordinator on 8204 3611 for more information. (Country callers 1300 737 637.)
